Learn about how to setup and manage your GMB account in 2021 with this new FREE Google My Business Management Training by Mac Frederick.
Getting Started with Google My Business
Google My Business is a free account that allows you to register your business online. Your business listing will show up under Google Search and Google Map results when potential customers search for related products and services. GMB is a must-have when it comes to great Local SEO.
Consider downloading the Google My Business app to access your account on your phone when you’re on the go and away from your computer or laptop. If you don’t have a Google My Business account, you can make one now using either a free Gmail account or your Google business account.
For starters, you want to know what Google My Business is before you decide to invest your time into trying it. As the name implies, Google My Business allows you to create a listing for your business on Google.
When a consumer researches your business on Google — or even searches for terms related to your business — you want to ensure they have all the information they need to visit, make a purchase, or contact your company.
Login or Get Access to your Google My Business Account
The first thing you want to do is go to Google My Business and login, create or claim your GMB account. From here you might have to verify your account with a call or postcard.
Once you’re logged in you will be able to manage your GMB and access your dashboard. The dash allows you to view everything in once place: metrics, data, reviews, posts, products, content and much more. I typically use the dashboard to check my recent performance overview to see the data within the GMB account and if we’re growing or need to do more to get extra visibility.
From the dash you can also create new posts, add images, respond to reviews, download the mobile app, and much more.

How to Manage Your Google My Business Account
There are a few key things you want to keep in mind when managing your GMB:
- Review the Dash & Analytics
- Google Posts
- Images & Content
- Products & Services
Google Posts are a rather new feature that work just like social media, but for GMB. You can add posts for updates, new offers, specials, Covid updates, and more. Use these weekly to showcase posts when people search for your brand. They will show up in your GMB listing and on your knowledge panel under your business information.
Images and videos is important as well. Make sure to upload a logo and cover banner so people can see your branded content. This should only take a few minutes and you should try to add content here weekly. Customers will see these images on Google and Google Maps when searching your business. Customers can actually upload their own content as well.
Reviews are incredibly important to receive and respond to. I’d suggest using your GMB profile link to share with friends, family, customers and patrons. They can log into their G account and leave you a review. Make sure to respond to all these reviews positively and mention keywords about your products or services.
Products and services are sort of new as well. Within your GMB profile you can add products and services that your business offers. You can categorize these, add images, add links, and add pricing information. People can essentially shop directly from your Google Local results page using these links. This will be very handy in the future as GMB grows.
